WARNING • Rattlesnake Season

Posted on 03/22/2026

Rattlesnake season in Los Angeles typically runs from March through October, with the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake being the most common species in the area. They are active in hiking trails, canyons, and residential backyards, especially during warm, overcast weather. Bites are rare but serious; if bitten, call 911 immediately.

Key Safety Information
  • Be Aware: Watch where you step and place your hands, especially near rocks, brush, or logs.
  • Stay on Trails: Avoid high grass and stick to the center of paths.
  • Leash Dogs: Keep pets on a leash to prevent them from finding snakes.
  • Give Space: If you see or hear a rattlesnake, stop, stay calm, and slowly back away.
  • Do Not Interfere: Never try to handle, move, or kill a snake.
Rattlesnake Activity Areas
  • Trails: Common in areas like Griffith Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and local canyons.
  • Backyards: They may appear in yards bordering open spaces.
  • Weather: They are most active during warm spring and summer days, often basking in the sun, though they avoid extreme heat.
If Bitten
  • Stay calm and call 911 immediately.
  • Keep the bitten area below heart level.
  • Do not use a tourniquet or attempt to suck out the venom.
  • Get to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
