Gas Leak in Sylmar Prompts Evacuation of Apartment Building

A ruptured gas main caused a leak of natural gas in Sylmar Saturday, prompting authorities to evacuate a 12-unit apartment complex for about two hours.

The leak was reported at 12:03 p.m. Saturday at 14128 W. Polk St., near Foothill Boulevard and the Foothill (210) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. It was caused by an approximately 1-inch gas main break, officials said.

The apartment building was evacuated, with 12 units affected, authorities said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or medical complaints.

At 2:06 p.m., the LAFD reported that the line was secured, but said it would probably take a few hours to restore service to those affected.

There was no active fire hazard, the department added.
