FDA Announces Recall of Popular Dog Food Over Possible “Foreign Material” Contamination

Key Points

  • Pedigree recalled 13.2-ounce cans of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor with lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.
  • The recalled cans may contain dangerous shards of plastic and metal.
  • The cans were meant to be destroyed but were accidentally sold to customers.

You only want the best for your furry family members, and of course that means the tastiest food and treats to feed them. But even with the best of intentions, sometimes harmful ingredients or foreign objects can hide inside your pet’s food and make your dog sick.

According to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pedigree just recalled two lots of canned wet food for dogs that may contain sharp fragments of metal or plastic. The recalled products are 13.2-ounce cans of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor from lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.

The affected products had failed quality control by Mars Petcare, the company behind the Pedigree brand, and were sent to be destroyed by a third party. Instead, they were reportedly fraudulently funneled back into the marketplace and were sold to unknowing customers. Mars is working with police to determine how the affected products ended up being sold instead of destroyed.

When dogs swallow sharp foreign objects like plastic or metal shards, it can cause serious illness, including choking, laceration, and gastrointestinal blockages. Fortunately, as of the July 2 announcement, there have been no reports of dogs being harmed by the product so far. If your dog has already eaten the recalled product, watch for signs of sickness such as drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, trouble swallowing, and unusual fatigue. Contact a veterinarian if you have any concerns for or questions about your dog’s well-being.

If you have purchased any cans of wet food impacted by the recall but haven’t yet used them, throw them out immediately and request a refund. According to the brand’s website, you can contact PEDIGREE Consumer Care to initiate a replacement or with questions at 1-800-525-5273, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT), and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (CDT).
