EXTREME HEAT ALERT - PETS

Posted on 08/19/2026

With a heat advisory issued in Los Angeles, ensure your furry friends stay safe and cool, especially dogs with flat faces (brachycephalic breeds), like Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus), which may struggle to breathe, even at rest; those with thick coats (like German Shepherds, Huskies, and Golden Retrievers), and senior dogs, who may have a harder time regulating their body temperature due to factors like slower metabolism, obesity, and pre-existing health issues.

LA Animal Services would like to remind pet owners that too much heat can be extremely dangerous or even fatal for our pets. When it’s too hot for you, it’s even hotter for our pets.

  • NEVER leave your pet alone inside of a vehicle.
  • Give your pet extra water.
  • Do not leave your pet outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Know the signs of overheating.

Take walks in the morning or when it’s cooler in the day to ensure pavement is not too hot for your pet’s paw — if it’s too hot for you…it’s too hot for your furry friend.
