Yom Kippur 2026 (the Day of Atonement): September 20-21, 2026
Yom Kippur, the fast day, is the holiest day of the year for those who practice Judaism
It is not customary to say "Happy Yom Kippur" because it is a solemn day of reflection and atonement rather than a celebratory holiday. You can learn more about appropriate expressions in this guide from Chabad.org.
Instead of "happy," use these traditional greetings:
- G'mar chatima tovah: Means "a good final sealing" in Hebrew, wishing that you are sealed in the Book of Life.
- Have an easy fast or Tzom kal: Appropriate for those who observe the 25-hour fast.
- Have a meaningful Yom Kippur: A respectful and warm English alternative.

- Fasting: Observers abstain from food and drink, including water, for 25 hours.
