SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Several lanes of the Northbound 5 Freeway were shut down in Sylmar after a semitrailer reportedly transporting produce caught on fire.

The vehicle fire was reported just before 8 p.m. Monday near Roxford Street. The incident led to authorities initially closing all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway in the area.

A SigAlert was issued, effectively closing all lanes for at least 30 minutes while crews worked to clear the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

AIR7 flew over the scene as firefighters were putting out the flames. It looked like the semitrailer was a complete loss.

The incident created a traffic jam. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

No further information was immediately known.

Around 11:38 p.m., the CHP said four lanes would be shut down for approximately six hours.

By 4 a.m. Tuesday, the CHP said the HOV and #1 lane would be blocked for about two more hours. The rest of the lanes were open to traffic.
