When Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty debuted, it pierced the heart of the capitalist greed that fueled the Great Depression, inspiring audiences into action. Seven scenes unfold, revealing the intersecting lives of working class characters and their experiences with exploitation, corruption, and social injustice. The LA Mission Theatre Arts production takes this one step further, interlacing Waiting for Lefty with the screenplay of Salt of the Earth, the 1954 blacklisted film about a New Mexico mining strike, to create a contemporary tale of labor in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

Waiting for Lefty: A Sylmar Sonata is directed by Brian Tichnell, with text from Odets, Michael Wilson, William Shakespeare, LA Mission student David Carrera, and the student company. Scenic design is by Dorothy Hoover, lighting design by Bri Pattillo, and costume design by student Julianne Sanchez.
