Here are some ways to prepare for an earthquake:
Secure your home
Fasten shelves to walls, anchoring overhead lighting fixtures, and brace heavy furniture to walls. You can also confirm the strength of your house and walls.
Prepare an emergency supply kit
Include a first aid kit, flashlights with extra batteries, a portable radio with extra batteries, water, canned and packaged foods, a mechanical can opener, medications, and extra cash. You can also include blankets, a fire extinguisher, and supplies for cooking and sanitation.
Plan safety measures
Identify safe places indoors and outdoors, such as under sturdy furniture or in the open away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. You can also develop an emergency communication plan.
Learn what to do
If you're indoors during an earthquake, you can drop, cover, and hold on. This means dropping to the floor, crawling under a sturdy piece of furniture, and holding on until the shaking stops. If you're outdoors, you can drop and crawl toward open space. If you're driving, you can stop and stay in your vehicle, but avoid stopping near buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
