July 1st • Street Takeovers - New Laws / New Penalties

Posted on 06/30/2025

In California, new laws taking effect on July 1st will increase penalties for street takeovers, including potential vehicle impoundment for participants and spectators, and license suspensions.  These measures are part of a broader effort to curb dangerous street racing and sideshows, which have become increasingly prevalent and risky.

Key aspects of the new laws include:
  • Increased penalties:
Fines for participating in or spectating at street takeovers are being increased, and vehicles used in these events can be impounded.

  • License suspensions:
Courts can now suspend the driver's license of those convicted of street takeover-related offenses for 90 days to six months.

  • Expanded authority:
Law enforcement's ability to impound vehicles extends to those belonging to spectators and those aiding in the illegal activities.

  • Targeting social media:
The laws also address the use of social media to promote and organize these events, including removing posts and demonetizing profiles that promote them.

  • Statewide standardization:
The laws standardize the terminology for "sideshows" and "street takeovers" across the state.
